George Clooney is sending a message to former President Trump after he hurled insults at the actor over the summer.
Clooney reacted on Tuesday to Trump’s Truth Social post from July telling the actor “to get out of politics and go back to television”.
“I will if he does,” Clooney quipped on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” prompting laughter and cheers from the audience.
Clooney penned an op-ed for The New York Times in July that called on President Biden to drop out of the race for the White House following a disastrous debate performance. Clooney, a strong supporter of Democrats, had hosted fundraisers for Biden’s campaign before the op-ed.
Clooney also spoke about the op-ed with Kimmel on Tuesday night and praised Biden for his decision.
“The bottom line is that that it’s very hard to let go of power, and President Biden did something really extraordinary,” he said.
Kimmel also asked if Clooney has thought about whether Trump was going to come after him if he is elected to the White House in November.
“Yeah, I have, but I just, I’m comforted in the fact that he’s coming after you first. I know that theory about you don’t have to be faster than the bear, you just have to be faster than the one kid,” Clooney joked. “You’re that one kid.”
Kimmel later questioned whether Clooney write another op-ed, but targeting Trump this time.
“Have you thought about writing an op ed in The Times asking him to step down because it worked once? Why not try it again?” Kimmel quipped.
Just days after Clooney wrote the op-ed for The New York Times, Biden revealed on July 21 that he would be withdrawing from the presidential race and endorsing Harris. Since then, Harris has closed the gap across many national and swing-state polling as she attempts to make her appeal to voters.
