Former President Donald Trump’s donors are speaking out after discovering that over $55 million of their contributions was allocated to cover legal expenses in 2023. According to Raw Story’s report on Sunday, February 4, a significant portion of this substantial sum originated from small-dollar donors, including working-class individuals and retirees.
Danny Westneat, a columnist for the Seattle Times, brought attention to this revelation, highlighting that Trump received more than 39,000 individual donations from residents of Washington state alone, amounting to $1.34 million.
The average contribution, totaling $34, predominantly originated from everyday individuals such as school custodians, self-employed handymen, and retired bank employees.
In his Saturday column, Westneat featured an interview with a retired bank employee from Seattle who contributed “a few hundred bucks” to Trump’s campaign.
When asked about Trump’s allocation of $55 million for legal expenses, the donor expressed indifference, stating, “Not at all, it doesn’t bother me. I don’t know anything about how he’s actually using the money. If he’s defending himself with my money, then that’s more than fine with me.”
This perspective mirrors a subset of Trump’s donor base who prioritize supporting the former president amid legal challenges.
